About: This summer, The College of Science and Technology (CoST) will offer interdisciplinary summer camps to expose Black and Brown students to the fields of science, technology, and mathematics. The camp offers 14 days of hands-on learning experience focused on project-based, interdisciplinary STEM education. Participants will engage in science, mathematics, and technology through instruction and immersive activities designed to build both knowledge and confidence. Running six hours each day, the camp includes lunch, breaks, community-building activities, college preparation sessions, field trips, and exciting tech experiences—like coding, programming, networking, drones, robotics, game design, and scientific discovery and experimental methods. Each day introduces a new area of STEM, giving students the opportunity to explore diverse scientific fields with focused instruction: for example, Biology on Monday, Chemistry on Tuesday, Physics on Wednesday, Geomatics on Thursday, and so on. Mathematics is incorporated daily, reinforcing its foundational role in all areas of STEM. Participants will learn about STEM career paths and gain insights into strategies for college success. Designed to be a welcoming environment for Black and Brown high school students, the camp fosters learning among peers with similar backgrounds. Mentorship from students and faculty in the College of Science and Technology provides representation and inspiration, encouraging participants to envision themselves in STEM careers. The camp serves 30 rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, aiming to cultivate or deepen a love for STEM while inspiring participants to consider educational and professional futures in these fields and potentially matriculate in one of CoST majors.
