EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Nov. 23, 2020) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will be featured during Capital One’s "The Match: Champions for Change" premier golf event, presented by Turner Sports.
The event, which TNT will exclusively televise Friday, Nov. 27, beginning at 3 p.m., from Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona, pits World Golf Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley against Stephen Curry of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
This third installment of "The Match" will contribute toward and highlight diversity, equality and inclusion through donations to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) while raising awareness and spotlighting opportunities for diversity and equality in sports.
“We are delighted to hear that 'The Match' has chosen to shine a spotlight on HBCUs. To have such standout names like Phil Mickelson, Charles Barkley, Steph Curry and Peyton Manning associated with support of N.C. A&T and our fellow HBCUs reinforces the importance of these institutions to our nation and those we serve,” said Kenneth Sigmon, vice chancellor for university advancement.
“I truly believe an investment in HBCUs is an investment in our future and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to support these great institutions,” said Curry, who was raised in North Carolina and attended Davidson College.
Bleacher Report will provide exclusive live content leading up to and during the event on the B/R app. The competition format will be modified alternate-shot match-play.
All players will have open mics throughout the competition, with the ability to communicate directly with other golfers and the broadcast commentators.
The event will be closed to the public and tournament organizers are working with public health officials on competition and production logistics to ensure the event follows safety and health protocols.
“Capital One’s 'The Match' has become a franchise featuring some of the best in sports and entertainment, and we’re looking forward to this next iteration and the meaningful awareness it will raise for social change,” said Lenny Daniels, president of Turner Sports.
