According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults living with diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing severe illness or complications when exposed to COVID-19. The disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the country and disproportionately affects minority ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged populations. Type 2 diabetes is driven by the obesity crisis. Obesity prevalence is especially pronounced in many Southeastern states, including North Carolina. The North Carolina Diabetes Research Center (NCDRC), a consortium comprised of Wake Forest University, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Duke University, hosted a successful virtual workshop for faculty members from academic research institutions in North Carolina and surrounding states during Diabetes Awareness Month. The focus of this year’s workshop was “Addressing Diabetes-related Health Disparities in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.” N.C. A&T leads the NCDRC Enrichment Program, which organized the workshop.

This year has been rife with tensions and tragedies around race and social justice. Between protests for justice, and the health disparities laid bare by COVID-19, the need to address health and healthcare-related inequalities cannot be overstated. The College of Health and Human Sciences is answering this call by hosting in a two-day virtual symposium on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13 for A&T faculty, staff and students, faith communities in Guilford, Rockingham and Alamance counties, partners at Cone Health and NC Action Coalition, and community members. The goal of this year’s symposium is to generate a robust discussion on prevention, health behaviors, healthcare experiences and best practices for moving forward.
