EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Dec. 3, 2020) – East Dockery, a junior journalism and mass communication student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, was named the 2020 Ed Bradley Scholar by The Radio Television Digital News Foundation.
Dockery, who was previously named a 2019 Rhoden Fellow and worked for ESPN’s The Undefeated, said the $10,000 scholarship is a great honor.
“Any journalist would be honored,” she said. “It’s an honor for me, my department and it makes my passion for journalism that much stronger.”
Dockery hopes to become a host of her own sports and entertainment show in the same vein as Oprah, David Letterman and Taylor Rooks. Her dream guests include Lebron James, Denzel Washington and Robert Downey Jr.
As the Ed Bradley Scholar, Dockery is invited to attend virtual Radio Television Digital News Association conferences and network with past scholars.
The Ed Bradley Scholarship is awarded to one student each year. Bradley, who is best known for his award-winning work in 26 years on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” and as the first African American White House TV correspondent, established the scholarship in 1994. He died in 2006.
Past winners have gone on to work for organizations including NPR, CNN, and Al-Jazeera America. They have enjoyed careers from reporter, anchor, and media attorney to “Saturday Night Live” comedy writer and White House speechwriter.
