UNC System Approves N.C. A&T’s First “Flight Path” Online Degree Programs

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Nov. 17, 2025) – The University of North Carolina System has given official approval for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to offer its first “Flight Path” online degree programs housed in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS).

The two programs, the B.S. in criminal justice and B.A. in liberal studies, are being offered in partnership with Project Kitty Hawk (PKH), a non-profit affiliate of the University of North Carolina System that helps North Carolina’s public universities develop and launch online degree programs specifically designed for adults past traditional college age. The degree programs powered by Project Kitty Hawk, called “Flight Path” programs, focus on in-demand fields for adult learners and are vital for re-engaging students who have not completed their degrees.

These eight-week “mini-mesters” provide expedited learning options for adult learners seeking a convenient, cost-effective and high-quality education.

Criminal justice students will build a deep understanding of criminology and the justice system while preparing for careers in government, the private sector or advanced study. Instructors with expertise in law enforcement, cybersecurity and forensic science combine theory and practical experience to equip learners with the skills to succeed in their fields.

The liberal studies program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that helps students reach their academic and professional goals while developing strong critical and creative thinking skills. It emphasizes making connections across disciplines and applying knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.

“These inaugural programs can create a map of success that will allow others to follow,” said Shannon Campbell, Ph.D., CAHSS dean. “Adult learners are looking for the same opportunities as graduate students, as they are analogous with one another.

Through the PKH platform, “a larger audience will get to see our scholars, makers, doers and believers within these two programs,” said Campbell.

The Flight Path initiative directly supports the state’s attainment goal of ensuring 2 million North Carolinians hold a high-quality credential or degree by 2030. By providing accessible and flexible pathways for adult learners, A&T and PKH are expanding educational opportunity and workforce readiness across the state.

In the next 18 months, A&T and PKH expect to launch five additional programs, with a projected 4,000 students joining A&T Flight Path programs over the next five years.

CAHSS prepares students to lead and serve in a global society as one of the largest academic units at A&T, serving six departments with more than 30 degree programs, including master’s and Ph.D. programs.
