According to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis, Blacks represented only 9% of employees in STEM-related fields. One study has also shown that Black and Hispanic students either transfer or drop out of these programs at higher rates than white students. Researchers at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University are addressing these challenges by developing an assessment tool to measure historically Black colleges and universities students’ science capital and leverage the information to create strategies that enhance their motivation and retention in STEM.

Addressing Diabetes-associated Health Disparities: A Wake-up Call Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults living with diabetes are at an increased risk of experiencing severe illness or complications when exposed to COVID-19. The disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the country and disproportionately affects minority ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged populations. Type 2 diabetes is driven by the obesity crisis. Obesity prevalence is especially pronounced in many Southeastern states, including North Carolina. The North Carolina Diabetes Research Center (NCDRC), a consortium comprised of Wake Forest University, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Duke University, hosted a successful virtual workshop for faculty members from academic research institutions in North Carolina and surrounding states during Diabetes Awareness Month. The focus of this year’s workshop was “Addressing Diabetes-related Health Disparities in Light of the COVID-19 Pandemic.” N.C. A&T leads the NCDRC Enrichment Program, which organized the workshop.

This month aims to increase the general public’s understanding of the disease, the impact it has on the person directly affected and their caretakers, and highlight potential care options and best practices. Aixi Zhou, Ph.D., P.E., chair of the Department of Applied Engineering Technology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been named a 2020 Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Fellow. Zhou, an SFPE member since 2008, was selected along with only eight other members in recognition of their achievements in the field and outstanding contributions to society. Since its inception in 1950, the international organization has named only 322 fellows out of its 4,700 members.

To learn more about the impact service learning, course-based research experiences (SL-CURE) can have on students, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $238,214 to researchers in the College of Science and Technology (CoST) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The funding will support a collaborative research project across multiple institutions to study a hybrid course designed to influence students from various disciplines and their perceptions, interests and motivations to pursue careers in STEM and research.
N.C. A&T Team Determines Method to Improve Shelf-Life of Peanuts

A study led by Jianmei Yu, Ph.D., a research associate professor in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, evaluated whether the protease treatment of peanuts will have an impact on the oxidative stability during storage. Yu’s previous study showed this treatment was more effective than others in reducing the allergen content of peanuts.
N.C. A&T Researchers Receive $200K to Study Psychosocial Determinants of Successful Remote Learning

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $200,000 grant to an interdisciplinary team at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University to study the psychosocial determinants of successful remote learning among students from N.C. A&T and other public HBCUs. The faculty team consists of investigators with complementary expertise: lead principal investigator Adrienne Aiken Morgan, Ph.D. (psychology), Anna Lee, Ph.D. (psychology), Stephanie Teixeira-Poit, Ph.D. (social work and sociology), Jeannette Wade, Ph.D. (social work and sociology), Smriti Shrestha, Ph.D. (statistician, nursing), and Christopher Doss, Ph.D. (electrical and computer engineering).

Stephanie Luster-Teasley, Ph.D., chair of the civil architectural and environmental engineering department at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, received awards from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and Michigan State University (MSU), where she earned her M.S. in chemical engineering and Ph.D. in environmental engineering. Luster-Teasley, an N.C. &T alumna, won the ASEE Environmental Division Service Award and was recognized by MSU with the 2020 Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

Solomon Bililign, Ph.D., a professor of physics at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, is the chair of a nine-person international committee for a three-day workshop on Pilot Design for Air Quality in Africa, which will be held at the University of Maryland College Park this fall. Experts from the U.S., Ethiopia and Europe will develop research methodology to better measure and understand sources and chemistry of pollutants in emerging African megacities like Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
